Merrick Young Rayne, LA - Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Friday, May 23, 2014 at 11:00 am for Joseph Merrick Young , 84, who died Wednesday, May 21, 2014 in Encore Nursing Home in Crowley, LA.. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery #2, Mausoleum, Rayne, LA. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Margaret Anne Andrus Young of Rayne, two daughters, Pam Young Gibbens of Houston, TX, Susan Young Roberts and husband Robert B. of Lafayette, two sons, Rick Young and wife Kathy of Lafayette, Steven Young and wife Deborah Ann of Rayne, ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, Hadley Young and Octavia Aguillard Young, maternal grandparents, Eva and Ernest Aguillard. Coach Merrick Young was a member of Knights of Columbus, American Legion, avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden and following his favorite sports teams (especially the Saints, LSU and his favorite golfer, Tiger Woods). He truly enjoyed cooking for his entire family. He looked forward to visits with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed his daily morning visits with close friends solving the world's problems. He was a retired Teacher, Head Football Coach, Principle and Adult Driver Educator.His involvements through the years were Louisiana Education Association, National Educators Association, Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, Acadia Parish Retired Teachers Association, National Catholic Education Association, 4 Years United States Air Force. A rosary will be recited Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 7:00 pm at Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne, LA. Friends will be received at Gossen Funeral Home, Inc., Rayne, LA. Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm and Friday, May 23, 2014 from 8:00 am until 10:30 am. Pallbearers will be five grandsons, Brad Young, Nick Gibbens, Cole Gibbens, Jon-Michel Roberts, Merrick Young II and grandson-in-law, Preston LeJeune.
